Planning for Post-Secondary Education: How to Secure Your Future Amid Uncertainty

As a new election approaches, government agencies are bracing for the future and their sustainability in the next administration. One agency that has faced decades of scrutiny and been a target for dismantling is the United States Department of Education. This agency houses several offices that help support students as they navigate the education system, from pre-K through post-secondary education. This includes Federal Student Aid, which manages all federal student aid programs. Changes to this office leave many students and their families wondering what will happen to their dreams of pursuing higher education.

With these unknowns looming, it’s more important than ever for future students to prepare for their post-secondary journey and take steps to secure their future. Here are a few ways students can best prepare for the path ahead.

1. Have a Financial Education Plan

Much like buying a house or a car, obtaining a post-secondary education is a significant investment that requires careful consideration. Too often, future students choose a school based on a program or its prestige, but fail to factor in the financial commitment required. All school decisions should be made with the budget in mind. If student loans are part of the equation, students should carefully consider how much debt they are willing to take on. Keep in mind that this money will eventually need to be repaid—and student loans can linger forever.

2. Create a Timeline for Preparation

Similar to buying a house or car, preparing for a post-secondary program takes time. In my experience, I’ve met many people on the brink of high school graduation who, when asked about their future, are unsure of where they’ll be attending school in the fall—yet they still intend to go. Future students must take the time to plan and research their educational journey. Doing so will give them time to explore programs, identify funding sources, visit potential schools, and more.

Here’s a suggested timeline for various types of post-secondary education:

• 4-year University: 12-18 months before starting
• 2-year College: 3-6 months before starting
• Trade School: 6-12 months before starting
• Professional Certification Programs: 3-6 months before starting

3. Identify a Program to Study

This is arguably one of the most overlooked but essential steps in the post-secondary journey. Identifying a program to study is key to understanding why you’re pursuing education in the first place. When students are clear about their purpose for being in school, it helps them map out a plan for the type of school they want to attend and the financial investment required.

Choosing a program can also help determine the cost of the education, the potential career outlook, and the funding options available.

Personal Note: Some students may be unsure about what to major in, especially those just out of high school who may not yet know which career path best suits them. If this is the case, students should take the time to reflect on their interests and long-term goals. It may be helpful to take some introductory courses at a community college or work through general studies while meeting with a career counselor.

It’s important that students do not declare a major until they are confident in their choice and have ensured that their financial plan can support their chosen path.

4. Be Prepared for the Unknown

As the character from the critically acclaimed movie Forrest Gump says, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” This rings especially true in today’s political climate. The future of federal student aid, educational programs, and post-secondary funding remains uncertain, which means students need to be strategic in their planning. Now, more than ever, students should focus on securing a pathway to affordable education and seek opportunities that support their long-term development.
